I liked the idea of this thought experiment, but I had to quit after just the first few chapters made me cringe. If you like fanfic and romance, you may enjoy it, but this reminded me that I just don't enjoy genre.

I found the first third of this novel surprisingly dull. Nevertheless, I persisted, and the story became much more compelling in its post-Bill years. Many of the mundane details from early in the book are evoked in later situations, becoming more relevant and paying off after all. I found it more upsetting than comforting to read this alternative history at this particular moment--but Sittenfeld, not surprisingly, pulls it off well.
