The Familiar is a unique story rich with complicated and intriguing characters. I love Bardugo’s writing style. She had me falling in love, shedding tears and hoping for a happy outcome, all while cursing the characters for their greed and arrogance.

The story did take me a little while to get into, but once I was in it, my goodness was I invested! The ending of this story was absolutely stunning and it left me guessing until the very end.

The diverse range of characters were complex and my feelings towards them changed with the story as I felt connected to their successes as well as their downfalls. The love story was divine, with Santangel making me swoon with his professions of love.

I would definitely recommend this book to lovers of dark historical fantasy. I loved moving through this Spanish setting, and thoroughly enjoyed the twists and turns of this story.
