This is the first issue of Dark Mountain that I've read, and while I'm a big admirer of the goals of the Dark Mountain Project, this issue is a mix of the highly relevant and the not so relevant: some of the included pieces have no obvious connection to the "uncivilized" art that Dark Mountain seeks to foster.

Which is not to say that there are not any relevant stories herein! Shaun Tan's "Bears with Lawyers" is the obvious standout, a brilliant short fiction that gets right to the heart of the matter. Ekow Mannar, Siana Fitzjohn, Mike Cipra, and Mark Martin also contribute shorts that are well worth reading, and some the artwork interspersed with the stories is okay. But most of the other fiction is disappointing.

I'm still interested enough in the Dark Mountain Project to look forward to future issues, but I'm certainly hoping that they'll exhibit a higher overall standard of content than issue 18.
