If you love J.R.R. Tolkien, you need to read this book. It's short and amazing. That's all there is to it really. Stop reading this review, go out buy the book, and read it. NOW!

The actual story is very enjoyable, the book with all it's additions, notes and other versions is abit tiresome

The last work of fiction published while Tolkien was still alive, Smith of Wootton Major is a sweet farewell from a grand master of mythology and fantasy fiction. The story itself is brief, but layered with dry wit and commentary about embracing life and passing from one generation to the next. I immediately re-read it and found more. This is one I can imagine revisiting from time to time.
