I liked this book, but there was a certain 'vagueness' to it. The issue is abortion, and the time period is the 1970's, but this is far from being a novel about social issues in a time of great social upheaval. Indeed, it is hard to remember that the story takes place in the 70's. There is very little background to anchor it in any time period.
The various characters deal with the issue in their own way, but there are no firm stances taken, or heated discussions regarding the issue. Religion never really enters the picture either. The only vocal opposition comes from Rowena's Uncle who, while Rowena slowly exsanguinates, calls the police instead of the ambulance.
This novel will likely not influence how you presently feel about the issue, but the characters are likeable (aside from the Uncle) and their plights realistic.
