This may have been a novella, but it sure was intense and bloody! I love how this seems to be a turning point for Mira and Eve. It has been building up, but now it is certain. Love those two, love the entire world that has been created!

In Death Series Novella, Book #7.5

This is a perfect Novella. She fits everything in, but doesn't feel rushed or squeezed for time. It has all the elements in the series and I really enjoyed this one as much as I would enjoy the full length novels in the series. It is a perfect mix of the detective/crime aspects and the relationship aspects of the series. This novella really shows how the series is in a quick, but thorough way.
If you have read the series this fits in perfectly in the timeline where it is and is highly enjoyable. As the series was being published this would have been the perfect "fix" while waiting on the next full length Novel.
If you have not read any of this series, you wouldn't be completely lost. You wouldn't get some of the references or know the relationships back stories though so you may not feel the same pull at this part of the books. Yet, it is written in a way you can still appreciate the characters and their relationships.

My first J.D. Robb novella, and it was a great read. I’m a huge Eve Dallas fan and look forward to every book I get to pick up and enjoy about Eve.

In this specific story, Eve and Roarke celebrate their first Christmas together but before they can truly enjoy it, Eve is called away to the murder of a judge. The note included at the scene is a wish list of public figures the murdered hopes to kill.

Eve finds herself fighting with Roarke about her safety but knows she is the only one who can truly bring this killer down and save lives of others.

This was really good...read just like her full books which is unusual for novellas. The grisley crimes are getting to me a little..I could use less gore for a break...but I love how character driven these stories are.

“He nearly smiled at the annoyance in her voice. “I admire my wife’s courage, her dedication to duty.”
“You tossed in ‘my wife’ to irritate me, didn’t you?”
“Of course.” Satisfied, he picked up her hand, kissed the knuckles.”

“I’m only going to say this once,” she began. “And only because it’s Christmas.”
“Banking for landing,” he warned her as he approached the private airstrip. “What are you only going to say once?”
“That maybe all these toys of yours aren’t a complete waste of time. Overindulgent, maybe, but not a complete waste of time.” “Darling, I’m touched.”

“Why do people live in places like this? There’s nothing here. You see all that sky?” she asked Roarke. “You shouldn’t be able to see that much sky from down here. It can’t be good for you. And where do they eat? We haven’t passed a single restaurant, glide cart, deli, nothing.”
“Cozily?” Roarke suggested. “Around the kitchen table.”
“All the time? Jesus.” She shuddered.
He laughed, smoothed a finger over her hair. “Eve, I adore you.”

“A horrible thought snuck into her busy mind. “We don’t have like a thing for New Year’s, do we? No party or anything.”
“No. I didn’t want anything but you.”
She looked back at him, narrowing her eyes even as the smile spread. “Do you practice saying stuff like that?”
“No.” He rose, framed her face and kissed her, hard and deep. “I have all that stuff on disc.”

“Properties I’ve transferred into your name.” Roarke spoke absently as he continued the scan.
“Transferred? What the hell for?”
He skimmed a finger lightly over her wedding ring and earned a punch in the shoulder. “You’re welcome.”
“Take it back. All of it.”
“It’s complicated. Taxes. Really, you’re doing me a favor.”

First read the Dutch translation in Feb '16 because I got it as a freebie. The translation's poor and spoils a lot of the quips book, which makes it loose it's edge. But trough it an interesting storyline recognisable so I started reading the "In Death" series from the beginning in English.

Got to this book again this April, so that tells you something about the quality of the series: it's entertaining and a quick relaxing read. Reading it English second time around, it fell in line with the rest of the series: witty, sharp, and a nice story.

Conclusion I'd advice against reading the translations, but the original is a good read. :)

I liked this little novella. I almost wish Midnight in Death and Holiday in Death had switched places. I liked seeing the results of one of Eve's cases. I mean so far we've seen her catch the killer(s), but we've not seen anything happen after-the-fact. This book picks up immediately after Holiday In Death. We are still dealing with Christmas and we are taken into the new year. it kind of signifys things ending and everything kind of starting over. Like I said I would have liked to have seen this in full length. There were times that the transitioning was a little confusing. Eve would be at Cop Central and the next sentence she would be home. Sometimes I would have to read over some passages again. Other than that minor thing I really enjoyed it. For those who don't know, this novella can be found in the anthology [bc:Silent Night|129527|Silent Night (includes In Death, #7.5)|J.D.
