Just pure time-crossing oceanic revolutionary planetary ancestral current-present brilliance.

I have never read a poetry book that made me cry, but APG’s words hit me deep. A beautiful exploration of ancestry and ceremony, I am inspired in my own writing. I plan on coming back again.

I'm usually not a big fan of poetry. I always feel like I'm missing something to understand it, that I'm not smart enough to appreciate it. None of this here. I didn't fully understand what I read (having read only one text by Sylvia Wynter), but I didn't care. I felt safely carried away in this book, it's so emotional and beautiful !! I will for sure come back to it, reread it again and again.

one of the most beautiful collections of poetry i've read in a minute. there's so much weaving Gumbs threads between the words of Sylvia Wynter, memories of her ancestors, and our relatives in the ocean. the imagery of the islands and water felt immersive that allowed me to feel less alone in how i love and am loved. at the beginning of the book, Gumbs ends her note with this quote: "When you think it's time to come up for air, go deeper. When you think your heart will break, stay there, stay with it. But at the same time, when you think you gotta hold onto something (like who you think you are), let go." Gumbs leads us on a meditative journey through grief, loss, pain, beauty, and always love.

some of my favorite poems were: "whale chorus," "commitment," "nunánuk," "Anguilla," "it's your father," "blood chorus," "birth chorus," "staying," and "letting go"
