Heid Erdrich is a poet and academic. For me, in her poetry collection Cell Traffic, she has a tendency to drift into academic self-consciousness and excess. When she avoids this and focuses on language and expressiveness, I really connect with her work. Her Ojibwe identity always shines through. So there was sifting to be done here, but it was well worth the effort and I look forward to repeat readings.

If you enjoy challenging Native American poets like Natalie Diaz or Billy Ray Belcourt, you might enjoy Cell Traffic as well.

As someone who doesn't usually like poetry I was hesitant to read this collection. Thankfully Erdrich's writing is full of so many little jokes it actually made the book enjoyable to read.
