This was a blend of poetry and story. Similar to the works of Safia Elhillo and Elizabeth Acevado. I'm learning that I'm a bit obsessed with this writing style.

I can like a book but NOT the FMC. I don't' know if I'm just really stuck up or what but it's rare that I immediately like an FMC. But I loved this ENTIRE book and the FMC. I loved her, my heart hurt for her. I wanted to beat her ex best friend's ass.

I was soo proud of her. This is a fantastic read. I listened on audio and got excited when I heard The Simone Biles was an executive producer on it!

Highly Recommend

I’d like to start this out by saying that I am a poem lover, I love poems, I’ve read the poet X before and loved that book. However, something about this book didn’t do it for me.

I’m aware that this book is shorter and therefore would not go into detail about a lot of things but I feel like it could have benefited from being longer. I love reading books and feeling some form of connection with the character or at least a good understanding and while I totally understood where the mc was coming from, I didn’t really connect to her, so I didn’t really care. It was an easy read, hence why I finished it and I did want to see where the rest of the story went although I would’ve been fine not knowing.

A lot of things go by very quickly, and that’s really the part that bugged me. It felt like every so often we’d get a new character, something happens, they’re gone for a while, they come back, it’s Wtv and so on.

I did have a few quotes in this book  that I did appreciate but I’m usually an avid tab user and this is definitely my least tabbed book. But all things said and done I did at least enjoy the writing style, I love how it read like a conversation and I enjoyed the way things were worded. I just didn’t particularly connect with anything or anyone hence my lack of interest  but it did have a good overall lesson so this is probably best for maybe like a middle school level class trying to go into poem analysis but that’s really it for me.

I hope you found this review helpful, Happy reading!

I wanted to love this but the timeline switches were too confusing. Not for me I'm afraid.

Sky has a lot going on. The relationship with her bully of a sister is unsettling, and the fact that her best friend Lay Li is freezing her out has sent her into a tailspin.

Read this with the understanding that you’re reading poetry- vignettes and episodes that bleed into each other to tell a larger story. The author’s voice feels authentic and familiar, and I think this book takes a creative approach to exploring the loss and challenges of friendship and holds a mirror to some of the ways (specifically Black) boys and girls are treated differently. It’s a journey around relationships and asks the question: who do you want to give your time, energy, and love to?

Chlorine Sky is a novel-is-verse about a young Black girl coming-of-age on a journey of self-discovery outside of former best friend, Lay Li. I liked the overall idea, but I just couldn't connect with the characters.

May be better read in print; I know it was for the poetic effect but so many times when listening the pause was so long it was awkward and I thought something was wrong with the audio. Even on 1.25 speed.

This short coming-of-age novel-in-verse introduces you to Sky who is experiencing struggles that will be relatable to many readers. I liked this exploration of what it means to be a girl growing up in the world, especially what it means to be a black teenager. I would have liked for more character development with the main character as well as going deeper on some of the subject matter.

Thank you Netgalley and Random House Kids for my gifted copy. I hate to rate a poetry book low but but I just didn't care for this one that much. I couldn't get past some of the misspelled words. It made it feel like it didn't flow very well.
