This is my first experience of the James Patterson Book Factory. Might be my last.

First off, it's hard to sustain suspense in a first-person, since we can assume the narrator survived.

Second, omigosh, she's going to be Plucky. I hate Plucky. It means her approach to ANY challenge is to head directly toward the danger.

Third, omigosh, she's working with a hunky, more experienced cop. Hello, I'm Stephanie Plum. Of course she's going to boink him with minimal intro.

Fourth, oh, wait, it's the 2020s, we'd better make her bi-curious.

She's apparently a genius, which is odd because she never shows it.

Now we got yer bad guy. He's implausibly capable. The fairly-plausible super-app gets carried well past credibility. Not to mention the burner phones that seem to come with 200 apps pre-installed. Hey, at least she had to download Stego.

I'm seeing that Patterson started as a marketing whiz.
Dude, it shows.
This is a book for the masses, where you only need to read till your lips get tired.

And the ending? I recognize this. It's "oh, we're at page 280 and we contracted for 300, better wrap it up quick. Let's have the FBI guess where she is." And super-genius bad guy, who's been way ahead all along, is suddenly about as smart as Homer Simpson.

Feh. Smooth, slick, empty.

Love James Paterson. Everything about this book was lame!! Very disappointing plot, characters and writing.

Like an episode of NCIS. Feels like a first book in a series.

My last book of 2020, and it was a wild ride! I loved this story of 22 years old Angela Hoot who was kicked out of MIT’s graduate program and was now an intern at the FBI investigating the murders of young women and their families. Angela is a genius coder and she needs to hack the computers and phones of these women to track the killers.
Angela’s mentor, Eve, helps Angela navigate the FBI’s case. Her supervisor, Billy Keats, and her bestie, Melanie, aka AA, also play a big part in the story.
When Angela gets close to cracking the case, the story turns up a notch.
Fast-paced and intriguing, I hope this is the start of a new series with a strong female protagonist.

Like other people have said, men really shouldn't try to write in a woman's voice. It made Angela a really clunky character. So much so that at some points I found myself rooting for the criminals.

In fact, at one point when the Engineer and the Poet were transporting her in the van I actually wished they would just make good on their threats

It wasn't a terrible book, and was quite an easy read. I did like the hackers trying to outsmart each other storyline, but I just found it hard to be invested in the main character.
