i’m going to preface this review by saying i still wear a kn-95 when i go out and run my errands even in the year 2024.

this is the most sanctimonious preachy after school special book that i’ve read in a long long time. thinking you can change anti-mask and anti-vax people’s minds by one simple conversation when in reality they are indoctrinated and unwilling to listen to any counter argument. also it’s only mentioned that mia wears as mask like three times and two of those are during the same outing. she has MULTIPLE outside people stay with her and don’t quarantine. she has people from different countries stay with her and she’s hugging them and hanging out with them with NO mention of masks, socially distancing or isolation. one is even a child who is all over the other children when mia is *so so* worried about them getting covid. what was i expecting anyway bc mia is peak white feminist and she  never thinks of at risk populations outside of her elderly grandmother, children forgotten. this book is shit to be honest but what was i expecting.

Seemed unclear who the book's intended audience was. Mostly seemed to be aimed at children with how simple the writing is and how explicitly the message is laid out, but included adult content.

It was a little surreal to relive the pandemic through the eyes of the Princess of Genovia. I have only seen the other movies so I spent a lot of time coming to terms with the differences between the books and movies but overall I enjoyed this. It was absurd but relatable in all the right ways.

So I always forget when I read these books how much they differ from the movies, as they rank as some of my favs. And this book actually does poke fun at what they call the “unauthorized biopic” of Princess Mia’s life. I did like spending time with the characters again, but through a lot of the book I was hoping for something different then other books that came out about the same time period. As someone who lived through it, I wasn’t sure I was ready to read about it. But I did like a few interesting points made, and if you are truly a YOUNG adult, you probably will like it a lot.
