This was my favourite series as a child, and I always felt some trepidation at the idea of going back and rereading it as an adult in case I discovered that my fondness for it was merely coloured by nostalgia and faded memory. To my relief, that was not at all the case.

Talking about my sentimental attachment to the series will leave me with not much to say in the reviews of the rest of the books, but this opened up my childhood self to the genre of darker, modern fantasy, where faeries weren't sparkly and Disney-esque and where world-building and lore and history mattered. This was everything I loved and was interested in, and it remains one of my absolute favourite kinds of stories to this day and very much inspired me, even as an adult, in what I enjoy writing myself.

I don't often read romance like this, but the rest of the book is so wonderful and has so much depth and intrigue that I loved rereading it regardless, and I grew genuinely fond of Knife and Paul's relationship as I did so.
