there's a lot to like about this book, and what alexis daria sets out to do i really do admire and respect. not only is she trying to write a romance novel (which is much harder than i think a lot of people give romance authors credit for), but she's also giving us latinx folks representation that is so sparse and rare in the romance genre and world of books in general.

i loved how our leading man has been the leading man of numerous telenovelas as well, and the effort to make him a rounded character instead of just "hot puerto-rican telenovela star". Our protagonist jasmine is also so lovely and reminded me of myself that i couldn't help but feel called out at some points lol.

something i didn't know about this book going in is how spicy it can get. Like, it was a welcome surprise don't get me wrong but it did sort of catch me off guard lol. I really liked how Alexis Daria knows how some dirty talk in spanish is leagues hotter than that in english, and it definitely made me feel something whenever ashton did so.

the ending is sort of jarring since conflicts and storylines seem to rapidly be tied up in a small amount of pages, but overall it's a happy ending and that's sorta the reason why i pick up romances in the first place. i just want to have a happy ending and i don't think there's anything wrong with that.

** SPOILERS **
additionally, I think the epilogue is such a welcome thing, as it shows that the characters' problems aren't resolved with them ending up together, but something they have to work on through therapy. i was a big fan of that.

You Had Me at Hola takes us to the set of a new telenovela being filmed in NYC.

Jasmine, a soap opera actress, has recently had a very public break-up with her rockstar boyfriend. They've been splashed all over the tabloids, which is making it especially hard for her. But, she is excited that she is going to start filming a new bi-lingual romantic comedy series for a streaming service. Her co-star is Ashton, a telenovela heart throb from Puerto Rico by way of Florida. Jasmine is hopeful that this new role will finally give her leading lady status and Ashton is hopeful that his role will help him open us his career to American audiences. As the romance develops between their two characters on screen, the two grow closer off-screen.

This was a fun read. It helped me to escape the election madness. Both of the lead characters were likable and had clear motivations. There were definitely a few steamy scenes in there, remniscent of Love Quotient. I also enjoyed the peek into the creation of a new show and the Latinx cast of characters of this #ownvoices romance. It makes me want to rush off and watch Jane the Virgin or Ugly Betty.

Thank you to the publisher for the review copy!

I enjoyed the premise of the story but felt that the pacing was all off - being dragged out in some places and accelerated in others. I'm not sure the chemistry between the leads really came across to me and found the breakaway television scenes distracting to the overall story rather than adding to it.

This was a very fun read. I loved the diversity and representation in the book, it didn't feel inauthentic or forced or as if it was simply done to be checked off as a 'diverse book' as many books unfortunately are. The writing was fun and light-hearted and I enjoyed the mini telenovela like moments in the story which tied in perfectly with the setting and theme of the story. I have definitely never read something like this before, I feel like this story gives insight to what it's like to be an actress or actor and the world of media production, and not the being famous and dealing with the media aspect of acting, but rather the actual 'job' of acting and how actresses and actors work on developing characters that we grow to love and how they balance that with their life. I loved reading about that and I feel like I definitely learned a few things from this book, also how to use the term Latinx correctly, which is great!

This book also really gave me strong Lucifer (the show) vibes. Like the whole vibe of the story just matches in with Lucifer and I suppose I shouldn't explain why exactly as I don't want to spoil anything but am I the only one or did anyone else also notice it? Especially when Jasmine and Ashton were filming scenes of Carmen in Charge.
