"Adua" is a powerful novel by Italian-Senegalese writer Igiaba Scego, published in 2015. It tells the story of Adua, a Somali woman who migrates to Italy, and her struggles to integrate into a society that is hostile to immigrants.

The novel is a complex exploration of identity, race, and belonging in a postcolonial context. Scego masterfully weaves together Adua's personal story with a broader historical narrative, highlighting the legacies of colonialism and racism that continue to shape contemporary Italy.

One of the novel's strengths is its use of multiple perspectives. Adua's story is told from the perspectives of various characters, including her husband, her daughter, and a white Italian journalist. This allows Scego to offer a nuanced portrayal of the challenges faced by immigrants in Italy, as well as the complexities of identity in a multicultural society.

Scego's writing is poetic and evocative, and she does not shy away from addressing difficult and uncomfortable topics, such as racism, discrimination, and violence against women. However, the novel is also imbued with a sense of hope and resilience, as Adua and other immigrant characters find ways to resist and subvert oppressive structures.
