Crippled Peaks is a sleepy harbor town. The composition of landforms is quirky and feels like a small, magical place just over the hill and out of reach. It is relatable but just slightly off; you sense an element of the fantastic just beneath the surface. As we pan back through the village it is teeming with character and history. We are introduced to Sonja as she maintains the lighthouse. Everything about Sonja reads as strong, intelligent and capable. She is our touchstone. When she accepts these strange happenings as fact, we have no choice but to follow. This allows the story to expand exponentially without breaking our suspension of disbelief.

We get several introductions to Victuals (ostensibly Sonja's cat). The events of his story could be told as horror or thriller, but Victuals' loose fun energy keeps the adventure in the fairy tale realm. Every complex facet of Victuals personality is rendered with humor and meaning. You know, even as things get dire, that he will stumble, luck or will his way forward. The first volume ends on a cliff hanger, but it is inconceivable that you would stop here.

For my thoughts about second half of the adventure and impressions of the physical books and printing you can check out my review of reMIND: Volume 2.

Lovely art, quick and oooo story, and a cliffhanger ending, perfection for a desperate comic reader.

This was my first foray into graphic novels. I did it for a reading challenge and was quite skeptical about it. I must say, though, I did enjoy both Remind: Volume 1 and Remind: Volume 2. The artwork is very good and both creatively laid out on the page and an effective part of the story. The story itself was interesting, entertaining, and emotional as well.

I'm not saying I'm a new fan of the genre as a whole, but this was definitely a good entry into it.

The story, characters, and themes aren't earth-shattering, but they're solid and fun. What I really loved about reMIND was the gorgeous artwork and coloring, which Jason Brubaker did all himself. Brubaker succeeded in creating that something special that he and other comic fans search for at conventions, something fresh and gorgeous that you just have to take home with you. It was also interesting and heartening to hear about Brubaker's long road of hard work, creativity, collaboration, and apprehension to get reMIND published in a format true to his vision.

That... was really easy to like. I think I'm "in like" with this book. And cannot wait to read volume 2.

But since I HAVE to wait, I will.

Begrudgingly...

This has to be one of the quirkier books I've read lately. It's about an underwater kingdom ruled by a king whose aim is immortality. In secret, he captures those who would oppose him, as well as his healthy & hale son-in-law, and transfers their brains into the bodies of air-breathing animals. Said son-in-law escapes, only to find that his body is now that of a young inventor's cat who had previously gone missing. Pleased to be reunited with her cat, Sonja is quickly shocked at the changes Victuals (which is the coolest cat name ever) has undergone, especially his new-found ability to speak to her. Victuals must return to his underwater home to rescue his fiance before her twisted father has transferred her brain to a furry creature as well!

The story was well done, but infinitely strange.
