I had a really hard time with the first half, eventually giving up last winter. I picked it up again (at the same place I left off) last week when I was bereft of books and couldn't stop reading. Gaskell is witty and her characters are interesting. I will say the cockney dialect was a little hard for this yank to follow, and I wish the endnotes were footnotes (for when I'm reading in bed and am too lazy to flip to the back of the book). I loved N&S and am glad I gave it another shot; now, on to Wives & Daughters!

"North and South," paints incredibly vivid landscapes of poverty and affluence in urban and rural settings. As a heroine Margaret faces many hardships, and Gaskell portrays her as character both of her time in 19th c England and as a new woman who mediates societal differences. This was a satisfying read with enough tension in the resolution of whom she will choose that held me until the end.
