I was recommended this as a good start to getting into comic books. I really enjoyed the story and seeing peter’s character arc. I know this is only the first 7 comics so there wasn’t much time for other characters to shine but I felt that they built a good foundation for them to develop.

The only complaint that I really have is the notes of sexism. I am aware that this was written in the early 2000’s and much of it would have been considered normal at the time but that doesn’t change that it adds nothing to the story and feeds into sexist attitudes. An example of this is that they use the word “girl” derogatorily in one instance to indicate that one guy character is less than another guy who is “the man”.

I have not read any other Spider-Man comics, but I can say from a reader/writer's perspective that the portrayal of Peter Parker in this comic was incredibly relatable and full of depth. His characterization and experiences combined in this first volume of Ultimate Spider-Man truly provide a dimension to the character that cannot be ignored; one cannot help but feel his pain, his fear, and his sense of victory in even the smallest of instances. I would recommend this book to anyone who is trying to get into the Marvel universe, or trying to get into reading comics in general. It definitely spurred my interest!

Bendis when he first started out and didn't write every character with the exact same way of talking. Pretty good
