I have never considered myself someone who enjoys reading scifi as one of my major genres but in all honesty The Book of Koli is making me rethink that. The series is set in the far future after some variety of events brought about the fall of the human race (for the most part). Most people are living isolated lives never daring to venture out to other villages.

I found it slightly difficult to follow at first given the way the POV is written. I can say it's worth continuing though, and it created a pretty unique view as a reader, seeing as some things considered 'ancient' to the current story they might be commonplace in current real time. I found that this combined with the degree of information we can glean from the characters was what really caught me to keep reading.

The book also has a diverse set of main characters and it is one of the few books I've read that has multiple transgender characters where it is a large part of their life but thankfully isn't the only defined characteristic.

I don’t like the style of the opening narration, something about it doesn’t work for me. I think it’s that Koli is narrating from so far in the future, it makes it feel like being told a rambling story.

It ends just as the adventure really is getting ready to begin. I think for all the build-up about the terrifying living-trees there was very little terrifying living-tree content. It's disappointing slightly. The cult was a fun surprise though!

My absolute least favorite part of the book is one of my own personal pet peeves and it's nearly constant, in the future they use "of" instead of "have" like would of, could of, should of. I legit considered just putting it down after the third time I came across it but reminded myself this takes place hundreds of years in the future, language evolves and apparently deteriorates, too.

Koli is telling his own story from his vantage point as an older man but that didn't stop me from getting sucked into the peril. I'm interested enough in how he gets to that older stage of his life to continue reading this trilogy.

The story starts off slow, but once you become accustomed to the language, the pacing really picks up.
