A sweet little picture book about Mercedes, a seven-year old living in Berlin in the 1940s during the Berlin Airlift. She writes a letter to Lt. Gail Halverson, asking him to drop chocolate for her in her yard. The Chocolate Pilot writes back and sends her a package filled with goodies. Her prized possession is the letter, which she treasures throughout her life.

Sweet picture book of a little girl unable to go to the airport where the treats were dropped regularly for kids by "the chocolate pilot." Loved learning more about the situation and that they developed a lovely friendship that is lasting a lifetime.

Great read-aloud for WWII unit. For more historical background and related facts, pair it with "Chocolate Bomber."

This is a story of the Berlin Air Lift and it shows the impact of WWII on the children of Berlin and how a candy delivery boosted their spirits. This heartwarming tale would be a perfect book for me to read to my students in June as we finished up our WWII unit to introduce them to the Cold War. Kids of all ages would enjoy this read aloud.

Very cool, very true story about the Chocolate Pilot who brought gum and chocolate to kids during the Berlin Airlift. He would "wiggle" his wings so the children would know it was him. Very cute story. I read this with some kids, and they wanted us to go online to find more information. We even went to Youtube to learn more about this pilot! So not only is it a great book, but it inspired the kids to want to learn more about this time period, and this pilot, and really got their brains going! Double win!
