Good and informative book on US-sponsored genocides, starting from 1950s Indonesia up to near-present day. As expected from the title, the focus is on Indonesia as the country where these deliberate policies started, and the rest of the world is discussed comparatively briefly.

the lengths to which America went to label & crush ‘communists’ in third world countries is insane. a very important read. I wonder how many other atrocities have happened in the name of anticommunism

Bevins weaves together intimately personal narratives with thoroughly-sourced historical account of the activities of a cadre of federal officials, who - with either the blessings or on orders from the president - orchestrated, set in motion, or otherwise facilitated some of the least-discussed (in the US) atrocities of the 20th century accompanying the rise brutal regimes, all in the name of shadowboxing a nonexistent global communist conspiracy. There is thoughtful analyses, as well, of the lasting effects these tragedies have on our present world and the individual people who were caught in these events.
