After successfully protecting the small group of humans around Zeke Crosse on their way to Eden, Allie sets out to save the vampire who turned her.
On the way to him, however, she runs into Jackal again, the raider king of Old Chicago (whose city she and Zeke had bruned down to save their group; and who is looking for a cure to subjugate humanity once and for all), and has to make an alliance with him. At the moment, their goals align and she needs his help to fend of crazy Sarren to save Kanin.
Their way leads them back to New Covington and their plan to sneak in and get out with Kanin never really goes according to plan. There are a few surprises along the bloody way (some of which you don't see coming).

All in all, the second book is much like the first - lots of blood, lots of fighting, Allie struggling with her vampire and human side and deciding what kind of vampire she wants to be. Despite the more shallow plot, I am invested in finding out how this ends now.
