This book is full of triggers, so be forewarned before you read it. It filled me with shame for having voted for Reagan the first time I got to vote (I was only mimicking my parents’ votes, but still…). It also makes me wonder why the Islamic culture is the enemy when there are so many parallels in the White evangelical culture that run this country. The book also makes clear to me that everything wrong with the US is perpetuated by this same group.

At times nauseating, I ultimately think this is a must-read for understanding the United States today. This treatise establishes facts and presents a comprehensive explanation of how masculinity has been especially twisted over the past century to the point of electing Donald Trump. It's tough to swallow, but it feels like a large chunk of the population are living in a completely different established reality, even in my own backyard.

This is a very important look into the history of white evangelical America and how it has led us to where we are today with American politics. Highly recommend this book. I just wish this book would have dived deeper into how these shifting perspectives within the evangelical church affected marginalized groups. Or if we had gotten more perspectives from people who had left evangelicalism and why they left. What are their critiques?

It’s hard to formulate thoughts on this one right now. An important read.

Sharing a massive trigger warning for the last chapter, which examines the church’s failure to prevent, respond to, and protect sexual victimization of children and women in the church. Even working extensively (8+ years, heavily focused on trauma and primarily on childhood sexual abuse) with this subject, this chapter was triggering and overwhelming to me. And one point I had to just put it away for a while. Take good care, especially if you have sexual trauma with or without religious trauma.

This explains so much. Sometimes hard to read, especially with the most recent stuff, but so well laid out.
