This isn’t the most elegantly written book I’ve ever read but it’s a very necessary one. Cricket! Afternoon tea! Trains! The best judicial system in the world! Civilising the unruly natives! Ah yes, the British abroad, misguided perhaps but benevolent, right? Right? Of course not, you don’t amass the fortune and territory the British did with a ‘tally ho’ and ‘pip pip chaps’. Knowing about the brutality of the empire was not a shock but reading about the continued, and sometimes successful, resistance to the British was a surprise. A pleasant one.

This one was interesting but it requires a lot of background knowledge. I really struggled to follow some sections, especially those about India where I don't know much about the history or geography.
.
I wouldn't recommend trying to read it as a whole. If you're reading about a particular part of the empire it would be good for dipping into the relevant sections.
.
It kind of fell into the no man's land between an academic text and popular history.

Very insightful - it was incredibly useful for my research on exploitation in the British Empire.
