The language of this book is absolutely beautiful. I don't have words to describe it, but I was hooked from the first chapter. I loved reading about Hudes' family and her childhood and seeing how she interwove language, music, religion, art, and her family into each of her chapters. I was completely drawn into the book, and finished it entirely in one day. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone and everyone.

a beautiful memoir of strong women, and an eloquent, perceptive, and illustrative story of the role language, in all its forms, has in shaping us

Hudes is a beautiful poetic writer and I wanted to like this book more than I actually did. Can't put my finger on it but I just didn't feel connected to it. My mind kept wandering. So I'll just blame myself and say that I am flawed because I'm sure this book is great.

Powerful truths expressed with such strong narrative energy that a memoir feels like a novel.
