Chinese imperialism, both historical and modern, is (in my experience) a complicated subject to discuss if you're talking to Westerners, most of the time, because the response will typically be determined by their own political viewpoint—from a Western perspective. More right-wing Westerners will usually be against China's encroaching on countries such as Taiwan and Tibet, or regions such as Hong Kong and Xinjiang, because they view "China" as metonymous with "communism"; conversely, more left-wing Westerners will usually be for Chinese expansion, because they view "China" as metonymous with "communism." The same typically applies to other examples of current or former communist states, such as Russia (cf. Western response to Russian war crimes in Ukraine), Cuba (cf. Western iconographic hero worship of Che Guevara), or even North Korea (believe me, I also wish I were making this up).
