Overall, I felt like this book covered several key issues plaguing our world today, and they were covered with finesse and empathy. While I originally started reading this book for research purposes for political ideas and themes for my own YA fantasy novel series, Abdul’s words began to resonate with me on a different level. Truly a great book to read, and Abdul’s voice and character made it a pleasure to enjoy.

A fantastic and enlightening look into the issues that impact American politics and ways that the so called greatest country on Earth can actually be great.

So glad I finally picked this book up. El-Sayed has such a unique perspective on our structural issues in America and how we go about solving them. The beginning of the book where he talks about his own life experience is the best, while I found the rest a little data-heavy. All in all a great read, especially for those like myself with a combined interest in public health and politics.

So glad I got to learn more about one of my favorite podcast hosts and his work in this book! I particularly enjoyed the first part of this book which was written like a memoir. Abdul’s major academic accomplishments are so impressive, but I most enjoyed hearing about why he stopped practicing medicine and pursued public health/policy work. Not an easy move but I admire his introspection and passion for creating sustainable change. In the last two parts, he argues that the US is facing an epidemic of insecurity that permeates ever dimension of our lives and further divides the nation. He ends the book with 13 recommendations to build a healthier nation, and the one I found most interesting was his recommendation to build infrastructure for public banking to reduce the un/underbanked population. Will continue thinking about this!

I loved learning more about Abdul and his unique perspective on American politics as a person of color, a medical professional, a public health PhD, a dad, and a husband. His path into politics was so interesting to learn about! His writings on insecurity have me thinking a lot lately especially about how people we consider to be privileged are also victims of the insecurity mindset. This books gives me hope for the future and I hope Abdul will run again for political office one day!
