ik heb dit boek in twee delen gelezen met een dikke pauze ertussen, dus het verhaal voelt een beetje gefragmenteerd maar ik vond dit best leuk. vooral het deel dat ik als eerst las. op een gegeven moment vond ik het een beetje langdradig, toen het alleen nog maar ging over het rondreizen met Porgy & Bess. dat vond ik niet altijd even interessant. en soms vond ik de dingen ook een beetje ongeloofwaardig en alsof ze overdreven waren voor dramatisch effect, maar misschien was het wel allemaal echt gebeurd, idk. maya angelou heeft wel een heel prettige schrijfstijl en over het algemeen komt ze erg sympathiek over en kan ik me vaak vinden in wat ze zegt en vindt. ook leuk dat dit deel van haar autobiografieën zo over muziek ging. ik wil de andere delen ook wel lezen!!

Maya Angelou's autobiography vol.3, 1949-1955
Maya Angelou's life story is incredibly rich in experiences and people and emotion. This is the third volume of her autobiography and, in my opinion, tops the first two. I was shocked to realise, when several chapters into book 3, that by that point she was only in her early twenties- it seemed that she already had a lifetime worth of stories to tell. Her vivid storytelling about life as a performer and description of her relationship with her son is entertaining and moving; I thoroughly enjoyed reading it, as well as finding it interesting and informative to learn about life as a black woman touring Europe in the mid-20th century.

Oh man, did you know Maya Angelou was a showgirl? Or that she toured with a production of Porgy and Bess throughout Europe and Egypt? Or that her son was named Clyde, but he decided to rename himself Guy and everyone in the family just went along with it? These are the cool things I learned from this memoir of her early twenties. And, of course, she is just a beautiful writer. Thoroughly enjoyed it.

A bit anti climactic and seemingly drawn out at times. Though following maya through the details of her finding her dream and experiencing life abroad was worth it for the depiction of her struggle to reconcile her guilt of leaving her son when she returns and seeing her relationship with him come back alive in the end.
