This is probably the best YA fantasy I’ve read thus far this year. I thought it handled addiction with more compassion than I normally see in fiction, especially fantasy. I also deeply loved that the beating heart of this book was the love between sisters. In fact, there were very few men in this book, and I wasn’t expected to care about any of them, which earned the book another star 😂😂😂

I'd like to give the book 5 stars for the ideas it explores and how, but the writing was a bit too fast sometimes for me so I feel I have to take a bit off for that. I still absolutely love this book though, and think I will be purchasing a personal copy for myself.

Lucha reminds me a lot of Katniss (mom not around and pretty much raising her sister and a strong independent MC). The whole world building is beautifully written and I liked the way that it felt like it was a Planet of the Apes moment where it was in the future but after the fall of civilization almost. And as if Spanish was a lost language. The whole idea was super interesting. My only issue was that pacing was a bit off in parts. But this was my first book by this author and can’t wait to read more of their work!

I received an e-ARC of this book from Make Me a World, through TBR and Beyond Tours and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you!

Trigger warnings: drug addiction, death, murder, violence, manipulation, betrayal

LUCHA OF THE NIGHT FOREST follows Lucha Moya, a girl from a desolate and oppressed town called Robado, who hunts dark beasts through the Night Forest to help her younger sister and mother survive. A dire situation leads her to make a bargain with a scorned god which places her in the middle of a conflict she has no way to escape. Lucha must step into her power, or be consumed.

I really enjoy Mejia’s writing style and this book was no different! The tone is so atmospheric and eerie which worked so well with all the twisting details of the plot. I really enjoyed the characters, specially Lucha and her journey throughout the story. Unfortunately, the romance didn’t work for me. There were too many obstacles between the characters for me to buy into the pace of the feelings developing. However, I really enjoyed the overall message of the story and the unconventional ending. Would recommend for lovers of fierce, Latinx women and of exploring what it means to be chosen and to choose.

Ok I loved this book! The world was so different than what I have read recently, and I felt like it was totally immersive. The lore and forest were so interesting and the final battle was so good.

It was fast in the beginning then slowed down then sped up again.
