yes, i am an adult. yes, this book made me cry.

as a current child therapist and doctoral trainee in clinical psychology, i love getting glimpses of others’ real or fictional therapeutic experiences, as both the client and as the therapist. it’s super interesting to see what people take away from their therapy and what they remember their therapist saying and doing that helped them the most. for this reason, i loved seeing raina’s experience seeing a therapist for anxiety as a fifth-grader; i’m always wondering what kids find helpful and how therapists approach clients who are hesitant or unsure of the process.
i also LOVED when
they made a poster for michelle. this was the ultimate tearjerker for me. it can be difficult to forgive someone who has made you feel awful, but i love that they were eventually able to connect and forgive each other.

this one went a lot faster than smile, and since it wasn’t a childhood read for me, it didn’t have the nostalgia factor that would have pushed it up to five stars. overall though, a great read that i would highly recommend to kids in late elementary school or middle school who are dealing with anxiety and struggling with their peers, and their parents. (it’s a pretty fun read for adults too!)

An inspiring, true story about a girl dealing with anxiety and emetophobia. Something I deal with too! Great to hear these stories being told all around.
