This is my favorite kind of children’s book - informative and educational, but fun, interesting, and beautiful.

Beautifully written and illustrated children's book. My 7 year old enjoyed it. I loved the theme of the book, which focused on one boy's excitement for an upcoming garden party. Readers get to see the fruits and vegetables in a community garden. It's really a lovely read.

I received a digital ARC for this book from the publisher for my honest review.

Miguel needs to find sunflowers for his potluck, but where could they be? This is a wonderful book in a wonderful series all about the garden and food. As Miguel looks for his sunflowers, we discover a whole diversity of foods in the community gardens as we look at other fruits and vegetables and decide whether it is a sunflower. I love the easy concept of comparing other plants to sunflowers to learn about all the plants and how they are similar and yet not. Even though it is not addressed, I also love all the animals in every picture, showing the diversity of bugs and wildlife around the garden, and part of the garden. There’s even a yummy looking recipe at the end. A wonderful book for Summer, science, and first-time gardeners.

You know, this one wasn't my favorite. There are lots of community/rooftop garden books out recently, and I wouldn't necessarily pick this one from the bunch. It reminds me of Amara's Farm, which I think I prefer.

This was exactly the sweet, colorful, gentle, inclusive, beautiful picture book that I needed in my life right now. I borrowed it from my library, but I want to buy it now so I have it to look at whenever I'm having a bad moment. Thank you JaNay Brown-Wood and Samara Hardy!

Picture book.  Miguel and two male adults, all with shades of brown skin, head to the community garden in search of sunflowers for a garden party. After describing the sunflower's attributes, the reader joins Miguel as he searches for the sunflowers.  Apricot trees are tall, but too tall; an artichoke has petals, but they are green not yellow; etc.  Miguel eventually finds the sunflowers and has his garden party with friends, including Amara from the book Amara's Farm.

The story can be a fun way of comparing things that are not always compared, ie sunflowers and mushrooms.  I love the illustrations (including the colorful patterned endpapers), which include beneficial insects and a pet turtle.  A fun addition to gardening or agriculture themed picture books.
