[I recieved this book as part of a giveaway. I was super excited because 1. I won! + 2. I loved the first installment.]
The Night Country lacked the intriguing magic of The Hazel Wood. Fascinating in bits. Kept my attention but was peppered a tad heavily with groanworthy, trite moments and flashing pop culture references that took away any timelessness the story otherwise might have had (in that Wink at the Camera sort of way). Reveals were a bit....obvious and overtly set up, negating any chance of illiciting a gasp from me in what could have been wonderfully surprising moments. 3.5☆

Relistened to the pair of books this week. Enjoyed The Night Country much more the second time. Picked up in so much in both books I hasn’t the first time through. Very enjoyable. 4 stars.

This book was pretty good, but it was also just pretty weird. I did read through it quickly because I enjoyed the story and the mystery and wanted to know what happened next. But it was kind of dark and had more violence that was more gruesome than I was expecting. I think I would’ve appreciated it more if I knew to expect that, so here’s me letting other people know haha. It was a decent and intriguing story with a plot and fantasy world I found interesting but I also didn’t always enjoy the story or the internal dialogue of the characters.
