“A dreamer is one who can only find his way by moonlight, and his punishment is that he sees the dawn before the rest of the world.” -Erin Morgenstern, The Night Circus
The Night Circus is a waking dream, full of sparkling settings and decadent description. It flies from year-to-year and POV-to-POV, but you never find yourself waiting to get to “something more interesting.” The novel, like the circus itself, stops and starts, twists and turns, yet it all runs seamlessly – like clockwork. Fans of Emily Wilde’s Encyclopaedia of Faeries’ magical academia, the performative tension of Caraval, and the vivid imagery of V.E. Schwab will find themselves right at home in Morgenstern’s enchanting fantasy.

I'm not sure if my subtle dislike of this potentially fascinating story was due to the writing or rather the audiobook narrator. It was difficult to follow at times, due to jumping around in time, and certain characters were less sympathetic than their position in the story would suggest - though I feel if I had read it myself I might have felt differently, giving their words a different tone than the narrator.
