Actually, this one should have been titled Reckless as its primary female character is incredibly reckless and never seems to learn Society's rules. A very enjoyable erotic romance if only for its unique approach to romance. Miranda is secure in her family's love and wealthy enough to ignore society. A youthful indiscretion casts her from society only to find her incredibly bored and ripe for the Earl of Rochdale's plucking. A man who has only a vicious revenge on his mind.

Toss in Miranda's plain friend, Jane, who has given up and accepted the hand of a priggish bore yet accidentally encounters the roguish, handsome king of the thieves whose kisses melt her resolve.

This has been a fun series as its heroines have been plain and on-the-shelf. A nice switch from the ravishing beauties...

Isn't it funny how reviews of any kind are SO subjective?

Before I started to read this book, I read a full page's worth of reviews on Goodreads, most citing how Breathless wasn't as good as the other books in the House of Rohan series. Well, funny enough, I thought it was the best in the series. Read the whole thing in one sitting and didn't want to put it down. Even dreamt about it in the overnight hours (which happens a lot when I've enjoyed what I've read).

From the hero/villain to the secondary storyline, I found myself anxiously anticipating what would happen next and could not wait for the moment of reckoning and redemption. I closed the book smiling and satisfied.

Oh, and Lucien (the hero/villain) was delicious. ;)

4.5 STARS ..another great addition to the series:)...by now I am used to the abrupt endings with no epilogue!...though they are always good, and filled with that last line that makes me laugh!...the hero was such an asshat in this book that I wanted just a bit more give from him...although there was some good payback with
Spoiler painting his room pink
....I was as excited as she was waiting for him to come home:)...I just feel if there was an epilogue in these books..they could be sooo much more!...but they dont, and Ill still read the next one!

Uggggh. I was finally liking a book in this series and but then it got so rapey and awful. This seemed more like a tale of stockholm syndrome than a romance. I just can't imagine why else a woman who found out her lover paid someone to ruin (aka rape) her for revenge would ever be able to love him again. It's completely absurd, even for a romance novel. Also, she says over and over in her mind how it wasn't rape, but it was certainly not consensual in any real way. Don't try to justify yourself for this horrifying story, Anne Stuart, rape is not romance, kidnapping someone is not BDSM sexy times. I gave this author a chance but can't stomach any more of this.

The House of Rohan series has been almost a breath of fresh air in my world of historicals. Anne Stuart has had no problem going that extra mile in her stories to make them that much more seductive. This one was not necessarily my favorite in the series, but it was still beautifully written. Miranda made a poor decision and ended up earning her freedom, but at a cost. Lucien is trying to enact revenge on Miranda's family and finds she's the perfect conduit. Even though they come together in less than ideal circumstances, when they open up to each other sparks fly. Loved this story and am excited to see there's another story coming!

re-read May 23, 2014. This book was terrible. Some kind of Stockholm situation. I cannot believe I gave it four stars.

I know the exact moment this went from 3 to 2 stars.
I really liked the heroines and the double narrative was a fun conceit. The development between Miranda and Lucien was well paced, particularly given the revenge fantasy Lucien had to get over.
Unfortunately, although the relationship is set up like a slow burn, it's not executed as such. In the last third of the book, Miranda forgives Lucien for a number of awful things
Spoiler including paying to have her raped
without any of the courage or sense she displays at the beginning. It's like the author got tired of writing and just needed to end the story. Which is really too bad, as I would have liked to see their relationship develop.

Since this series is the story about the wicked house of rohan, I really hoped that the protagonist would be a female rake. But alas, that is not the case. Honestly, my biggest problem with this is that it is so classic gender roles and stuff. I just find it too old-school and boring, to be honest.
The LI is supposed to be the evilest villain but I don't agree with this. He was not that evil. I liked him and enjoyed that the protagonist kept teasing him about being Byronic and like straight out of a gothic novel. The protagonist was fun too but it just felt like a big missed opportunity to have another character basically like the protagonist from book one. A virginal virgin but not. LOL, these books aren't even that old but the sentiments are too basic and antiquated for my taste.
I still liked it but I liked the first book better. Unfortunately, I had some bigger issues with that one.
This book didn't have those issues but it was also a bit more subdued.
