4 stars. This was good fun, even as an adult. The adventures are entertaining, unpredictable, and well-written. My only complaints are that the choices don’t really feel like choices because the results are so unpredictable, and that there are too many endings – it would have been better to have fewer, but deeper, storylines.

This was a whole lot of fun. I got eaten by the Loch Ness Monster, lived with the caveman, met Abraham Lincoln and even got to meet a UFO!

I’ve been interested in the area of IF (interactive fiction) for a while. I’ve been hopelessly addicted to Twine, a modern game engine for making interactive fiction. It’s such a charming way of storytelling and thought I’d go back and see the genre origins. So here it is, the first book of the Choose Your Own Adventure series published in 1979.

The writing is pretty simple, don’t expect anything deep or meaningful here, but despite this it’s a lot of fun! Think I managed to find all of the endings.

I was thrilled to find a copy of the first Choose Your Own Adventure Book and I bought it right away, all abuzz with memories of how much I loved these books as a kid. Of course, it's a book for children but nowadays all the grownups are reading Hairy Potter, so I don't have to worry about feeling embarrassed for reading this as an adult.

Something about a series... I simply had to read them all. Dad used to pick them up at rummage sales, and I'd get a dozen used copies (individually wrapped) at christmas. I still remember packing up my childhood belongings and convincing myself to donate these old books. But somewhere in a box in his basement, I kept this, #1, for the memories.

props for an imaginative new genre or whatever, but terrible writing.

Cute stories. If you've never read a CYOA book before I do recommend them for a bit of fun and light reading. I tried a couple of paths on my own first, but only marked this as complete once I mapped out every adventure pathway. Easy reading for adults but could make for something fun to do with your kids, depending on their age.
