I've never really read a travelogue before. I didn't think I would enjoy one. But Flaubert's writing is beautiful. It makes you want to go back in time to his time and travel to the places he did. I was quite inspired to make notes on my travels and record the colors of the skies, the quirks of the people you meet, the taste of the food, etc. :)
The writing also showcases the racism that existed back in the 1800s. The nonchalance with which he writes about it gives you the impression of how privileged Europeans were.
A good, short read.

I love Madame bovary and so I thought I’d love this short non fiction piece from when he travelled to Egypt in his 20s but I wish he spent longer describing what Egypt actually looked like, the book is extremely short and there is also quite a lot of racism and it talks about sodomy and how they experiment with young boys and men and it’s a secret that everyone knows. Apart from those things which are very reflective of the time it’s an ok read but certain things need to be expanded on and some things edited.
