This felt more like a textbook than a general academic source, which is fine if that's what you're looking for, but the lack of rigour applied to detail didn't fit well with the tone.

I really enjoyed this book and learned quite a lot but DAMN if it wasn’t a little difficult to push through. There’s a L O T of history and philosophers, ancient historians, cousins of important dudes mentioned. It reads like a textbook, quickly moving from topic to topic. The last two chapters on art and power and portraiture were difficult but ultimately interesting.

This is a really interesting introduction to the main themes surrounding the Romanisation of Classical Greek art. I especially liked that it started with the wall paintings mostly found in Pompeii as painting was often praised in contemporary texts but we have very little left today. There were also a lot of maps in the back that helped place where everything was going on.
