This is an action-packed read with believable and relatable characters who are trying to cope with the emotional trauma following the events of the second book in the series, Cold Magics, as they get caught up in a power struggle between the Crown and the Church. Erik does a great job of weaving character development together with a fast-moving plot. If you enjoy epic fantasy with an urban flavour and young characters struggling with the responsibilities of adulthood, I suggest you check out this whole series, starting with Small Magics. Each novel is a complete tale in itself, but the stakes for our main characters build throughout the series as circumstances force them to grow up fast and play increasingly greater roles in the politics and power plays around them.
