Alpha Star by Elsa Jade

In an engaging mashup, Elsa Jade weaves in shifters, and cyborgs, two other hugely popular tropes. The result is the LOL antics of the couples paired by the Intergalactic Dating Agency -- where Tinder and Match.Com meet spaceships and blasters.

With space opera-esque good vs evil to leaven the romance, these books are fast paced, and relatively short at ~ 150-170 pages. To borrow from fellow author Rachel Chanticleer, these types of books are 'cotton-candy reads'. Sweet and satisfying but not particularly substantial. All the more fun for being a guilty pleasure.

The writing was kind of confusing... things are mentioned but don't get explained until much later, and that's annoying for me. For example, Delaney is mentioned in the third paragraph of the first chapter, and several times after that, and in chapter 3 we learn her last name is the same as the protagonist, but it's not until chapter 4 that we learn (in a kind of confusing way, I might add; I had to read the paragraph twice to get it) that she's Zoe's sister in law. Really, it's frustrating. Also, there are some things that didn't make much sense,
Spoilerlike Sin's brother wanting to steal Sin's solar system... I mean, why? and how did Herril expect to get away with it? And how did he know to go look for Sin at Zoe's? He didn't know she was Sin's mate until he saw the ring on her finger, which had just appeared. Looks like this particular plot point was there just to have a confrontation at the end.

The worldbuilding is decent, although there are some things that don't get fully explained. Some I expect to find them in the other books of the series, but others I'm pretty sure won't get explained ever. The Jaxian society isn't fully explained, and I doubt it will ever be.

I’ve got to admit, I’m sure the later novels are better since this appears from other reviews to be a debut novel. However, I struggled to enjoy the story (not in the “it was bad” but in the “it made me sleepy” way), especially when they were on the ship.

This was fluff with a little humor and a sexy alien. It was fun and it had no problem keeping my attention. It will probably blend in with my other alien fluff over time but it was pretty good and a bit erotic too.

Why I like some of these and not others, I couldn't tell you. I've been trying to figure it out myself. In this one, I liked the characters. Again why, maybe less in the TSTL category than some of the others like [b:Ice Planet Barbarians|25128811|Ice Planet Barbarians (Ice Planet Barbarians, #1)|Ruby Dixon|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1430902048s/25128811.jpg|44825213] or [b:Alien Mate|34532149|Alien Mate (Alien Mate #1)|Cara Bristol|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1489247765s/34532149.jpg|55669404].

DNF 30%.

I can't get into the story. The FMC is lame and young and has roommates and is a debbie-downer. The hero is just meh. I struggled picking it back up after doing other things. I'd rather be reading something else. So I will.

The Hero was great, the Heroine was not so great. Not much romance.
