I liked this very much! It felt new but not in a self-conscious way: a well-written, interesting story evoking feelings I don't usually get out of any book despite experiencing them plenty in the real world. I think it will take some thinking and some time passing before I can really articulate what makes this book click with me - another one of those deceptively simple books with so much ticking away under the hood.

This was a really incredibly journey. Ren is an old woman who has left the modern world of a military coup and climate disaster behind by withdrawing to a hermitical life in the mountains. Her life is simple, until a unit of soldiers appear on her mountainside, asking questions about the mythical rain heron…

There is something so incredibly surreal about the writing. It has a hypnotic, twisting voice and I almost felt that time stopped existing outside of the pages of the novel. I absolutely adored it.
