Disappointing. Immature writing. Do like the characters.

I couldn't finish this book. Going into it, I thought the premise sounded interesting. Neva wants to seduce Duncan to get information on the wolf that almost killed her sister, Savannah. Okay, so she's doing this of her own free will.

The horrible thing about this book is that once she mates and gives herself to Duncan, he's allowed to control her and she has to mate with him, and do what he says. There's even magic that makes it impossible for her to refuse. This disgusts me. That's rape, period.

I can't recommend this book. Sexual assault is not a good premise for a "romance" novel.

It was so interesting to come back and read this title from Keri Arthur. As she explains, Beneath a Rising Moon was written prior to the Riley Jenson series and even though there are some similarities, they are not in the same world. Because this series was written before Riley Jenson and recently republished, it’s so interesting to see the growth of Ms. Arthur’s writing and how Riley Jenson was formed. I really enjoyed the sexiness and mystery of this series. I’ll admit, I was pretty quick to pick out the bad guy, but that didn’t detract from the story from me. It was fun to follow along with Neva and Duncan as they solved the mystery. I’m really excited to see where this series goes from here.

What I learned? Not to read book 2...It's fine if you don't want much story in with your werewolf sexathon but the constant wicked wolfing was getting boring by halfway through. There is a thread of a good story running through it about the investigation into a rogue wolf murdering the innocent but Mr Macho werewolf continually doing his 'hey wolf-girl, strip and give me sex again' became yawnsville. I don't mind a lot of sex in books but not at the expense of all the story.

Beneath a Rising Moon was a romantic fantasy that welcomed me into a new world. Werewolves aren't much different from the rest of the population, except for the fact that they feel the pull of the full moon, sexually. I have always been a big fan of Keri Arthur's books and I truly enjoyed the suspenseful and sexual feel to this book. Though there was something that I would have changed. I didn't like that Duncan always seemed to be tricking Neva into commitments that she eventually realized that she wanted. Other than that one problem I found myself quickly devouring Beneath a Rising Moon. Neva and Duncan had a true bond from the beginning of the book and it was easy to fall into the comfortable relationship between these two amazing characters. Ms. Arthur has always had an unbelievable talent and passion for writing and she did not disappoint in the debut novel of her Ripple Creek Werewolf series.

Neva's on the case, her sisters attack has hit a little too close to home. Someone is out for blood and Neva has found the one man who can help her get closer to the suspects, Duncan Sinclair. Seducing the one man of the Sinclair pack that has the best chance of being innocent is a risk she is willing to take to find the sadistic killer that is tormenting Ripple Creek. But with the pull of the full moon will Neva and Duncan be able to put aside their feelings for each other long enough to find who's behind the murders before it's too late?

This book was an easy read that held my interest to the end, but there were just too many moments that made me uncomfortable for me to award a third star. The old romance staple of "sure she says no, but she really ENJOYS being forced so it's all OK" was rife in the first half of the book, with the central couple being downright unpleasant to one another as they lie incessantly for reasons that aren't wholly valid. The second half was an improvement, but ultimately there seemed to be little connection between Neva and Duncan beyond sex and the magic of mating, which renders such trivialities as compatible personalities, interesting dialogue and an emotional connection as redundant. Not for me.

This has some gross gendered elements that are thankfully lessened in some of Keri Arthur's later works, which really hampered my enjoyment. We can have werewolves without having gross sexist patriarchal hierarchies, thanks.

Neva Grant is a werewolf on a mission. Her twin sister, Savannah was one of the women attacked by a crazed killer, but unlike the others she is still alive. Neva's plan is to continue her sister's detective work and find out who is behind the murders. She goes into the Sinclair mansion while they are having a dance (where werewolves go to find a partner) and is determined to dance with Duncan Sinclair so she can gain access to the mansion. Neva's plan works, but the attacks continue happening and Duncan is suspicious of her motives.

Neva and Duncan want the same thing, to figure out who is behind the murders. I wasn't sure if they would work well together, but they proved me wrong and worked as a great team. Beneath a Rising Moon has the whole Romeo and Juliette vibe going on. Neva's father is against the dance and only believes that wolves should have relations with their soul mate. Duncan is a former playboy and used to have a different dance partner at every turn.

The relationship between Neva and Duncan started off on a purely sexual basis then slowly morphed to a sweet romance. Duncan's suspicion of Neva causes distrust in both parties. I found myself rooting for their relationship since it seemed they had so much against them.

I recommend this book if you enjoy paranormal books that have a who-dun-it aspect.
