Stephen King is most known for his horror writing and I don't tend to gravitate to that genre as this is not a horror story but more of a speculative fiction/time travel story. I really enjoyed it. I found the time travel mechanic quite confusing as reading it - it gets explained at the end, but maybe that's the point because time travel is theoretically confusing. If you like these types of themes then you may well enjoy this book. I do think it's a bit long and meandering sometimes though, and could cut 100 or even 200 pages and it wouldn't really have changed the story. The pacing (to me) felt more like it was written as an episodic story. I'd definitely consider reading more (non horror) Stephen King.

Did I read the same book as all of you???
Stephen King does not know how to write female characters in the slightest and this book is a shining example of that. There is exactly 1 female character in this book and she's fairly important to the plot yet her appearance (ie: body, how she's dressed) seems to be the main thing King feels the need to share about her. When her body isn't being discussed, the reader gets bombarded with tales of her traumatic previous sexual experiences/relationships and how only the main character can show her proper love *eye roll*

This book was a long, arduous, often boring slog with some interesting time travel elements.

I started really liking this book, but the longer I read (and it's a long, long, long book), the more I was bothered by some problems with this book:
- (Unnecessary) use of racial slurs and sexist language and the clearly white male perspective on those issues (in the past and present)
- There is too much happening with the characters, making the plot that the book is supposedly about, almost seem like an afterthought
- I really didn't like the protagonist..
- The ending.. (but that's to be expected I guess when you pick up a Stephen King novel)

But, I did finish it and there were parts that I was really enjoying it, but that doesn't make up for the story overall being underwhelming in the and, on top of the problems listed above..

Also, I read some positive reviews about the narrator of the audiobook, but I really cringed the way he portrayed the speech patterns and accents of certain characters, especially foreign, black and mentally challenged people.

Stephen King's "11.22.63" was just not my cup of tea, really. I plodded on through the chapters in a dozy fashion and at the end of three days of the book, I can proudly say I'm done.

I will give King credit, the Kennedy Assassination is a complex and long-winded network of errors in the US police force and special forces, including the FBI. The concept was interesting, but the story just felt drawn out and intercepting moments did not need to happen. Unlike other King stories, I wasn't sold on the relationships between the protagonist and his beau. The leading man Jake Epping/George Amberson and the bonny young lass sidekick Sadie Dunhill spend most of the novel together and yet I did not feel the chemistry.

I will argue, I prefer King's horrors to his other genre-branches, and thus I'm biased against King on this 740 page book that spent 500 pages setting up the actual "book" itself.

I apologise, Mr. King, for such a harsh critique. I commend the interesting take on a time-travel story, quite a classic in the genre of sci-fi, and bringing it to its unique selling factor: Jake Epping himself. If it were not for the main character's 'I'm just a simple man here to kill the president's assassin' persona, I would not be sold. But Jake is the average American male, a respected teacher, a citizen concerned with maintaining friendships with the elderly. Just off to kill Lee Harvey Oswald.
