The write up on Two Dollar Radio sounded phenomenal. Indiana Jones crossed with The X-Files. Right up my alley. The description sounded unique and intriguing, and the book was short enough to read in a day. So why’d it take over a month to finish? Basically because it’s everything except what’s advertised. Like trying to saw through a 2x4 with dental floss. It was slow-going and outright boring. The plot was disjointed and ultimately unconnected. The clincher comes in the afterword when the ostensible “transcriber” of the audio tape is talking about how he tried to get the “manuscript” published and he claims after his initial read through he found the manuscript unpublishable. Truer words could not be spoken. Meta fiction meets garbage.

I made it about 60% percent through this book and really had no idea what was happening. It was catching, that’s for sure. But I feel like I wasn’t the right audience for this. Which is unfortunate, since I’m a big fan of found footage. It also wasn’t horror (to me at least). It was more surreal experience

Sort of a house of leaves crossed with the alchemist. That sounds horrible, and it's certainly not a completely successful book-- mystical and wise people of color, a conspiracy to suppress the tapes for unclear reasons for cheap mysteriousness-- but it makes the most of itself, and the existential crisis the unnamed journalist goes through has some depth.

A wicked little 'found' document transcribing the audio recordings of a man who seems to have come in contact with something... peculiar. It gets at the same eerie feeling as House of Leaves, but in miniature. Thinking about it though, I'm not quite sure why this has to be the transcription of audio recordings, and what that is really saying. Maybe I need to go back to really look at where that comes up in the text to find a pattern, but as it is, it feels a bit like a convenient way of cutting off the narratives wherever needed. That being said, it's plenty fun to get sucked into the weird world that this book only scratches the surface of.
