This memoir is so different from anything I've read before. I almost quit around page 20 because the content and language are very graphic. But I'm so glad I am stubborn and stuck with it. The author is full of raw and sharp edges, yet he finds optimism and clarity by the end of the book.

He also inspired in me a refreshed interest in classical music! He is real example of a relatable artist in a genre that is usually dominated by stuffy old perfectionists.

This book is not for everyone. But I found it relatable and unique in the most beautiful ways. I would recommend it with about a hundred trigger warnings. But, for me, this book gets 5 stars and will stay with me for a long time.

A difficult read, not because of the subject matter, but because I really disliked this guy after reading a few chapters and that impression didn't really improve. What he went through is terrible, but he comes across as a complete egomaniac.
I got recommended this book as someone thought I would relate to him - gladly I can say that I didn't.
Worst moments: The part where he says he won't go into detail about his rape, but then immediately does. The parts where he claims 'every rape victim/every man feels like this and if they say they don't, they're lying.' 'I have about as much chance of fucking Alexa Cheung' and 'I have about as much chance of fucking rihanna' - in fact all of the talk about trying to fuck girls - all of these made me cringe.

I've found the utmost respect for James Rhodes with this book. It made me reflect about why I love classical music so much and reinforced some important ideas about life and how to live it well.
Victims of abuse should always find safe places to speak and, not ignoring how important this is to them, it also allows us to learn how to make our society better and more honest about what we are doing wrong and how to change it.
This and talking about the life-changing power of music (which all of us have experienced, at least once in our lives) has made this book extremely relatable and empowering.
I shall forever appreciate his approach to music and be thankful that he makes it his mission to make classical music acessible to others.

A memoir so blunt and honest, filled with rage, joy, thunder and the bliss of music. Really really touching and beautiful.
