Like everyone, I've seen adaptations of A Christmas Carol so many times, it never occurred to me that I had never actually read the book. There's nothing in the book that hasn't been featured in any of the film versions. So adaptations get the tone of the novel closer than others, but the plot is so simple and effective that it doesn't matter. The only surprise (other than how enjoyable it was to read) is the level of fantasy. Dickens could do spooky. And he could write visually. The first ghost, for example, is constantly shifting from a baby to a old man and back. That's a strong visual, and one that only works in print.

Mostly living up to the expectations I had of it, though Scrooge's redemption felt a bit contrived. The other two novellas, on the other hand, were among the most boring things I think I've ever read.

A book to make you angry about the lack of change in attitudes to the poor and militant about preserving the welfare state.
