A little slow for a pre-school storytime, but would be nice in a school age. Themes: Fairy/Folk tale, books about letting go, friendship, birds

The princess learns how to leave her gilded cage after freeing a bird with the same problem.

I picked this up for 50c at a library book sale four years ago and I can't believe it's taken me this long to actually sit down and read it! The lonely little princess and the yellow bird are both caged by circumstance and cannot grow and be happy until they are set free. Leonid Gore's soft chalk-like pastel illustrations are absolutely luminous and of exquisite beauty. I wanted to tear pages from this book to frame and hang on my walls!
