Now that I've realized I like graphic novels I just grab any and all that look interesting to me. This was probably closer to a 2.5 star read but I appreciate the telling of a true story through beautifully done artwork. The horse's expressions especially were beautiful.

Gale is a horse trainer who steals her own horse to keep it from being injured in another race. She was sued and her case went to the California Supreme Court.

It took me a few days to get through this relatively short graphic novel because the pages were so text heavy and the narrative was at times hard to follow. In a 2 page spread, we travel between 1977, 1990 and 2004– too much, too confusing. Ultimately an interesting story about thoroughbred horse racing, I don’t know that this is one I’m clamoring to buy.

I loved this family story of a girl who loved horses growing up to save one. She took on $, power and the legal system to do what she felt was right. Perfect for all who love animals and hate entitlement.

Gail Ruffu is one of the most principled individuals I’ve ever met/read about. She stands up for her horse in ways that go far beyond what anyone would ever expect just because it is the right thing to do. There are some people who get along with animals better than people and I would guess that Gail is one of those people. In a world where animals need human protectors, Gail is a true defender.

This story was interesting and amazing. Gail Ruffu was a horse trainer with methods that weren't appreciated in the US. The world of horse racing is rough and can lack compassion for the animals - to the point of being inhumane. When Ruffu's horse was at risk of dying during a race, she stole or rescued (depending on who you ask) the horse, resulting in blacklisting and legal troubles. I learned so much from this graphic novel.

As someone who doesn’t know much about horses, this book was fascinating, horrifying, and inspirational. I would recommend it.

A very moving memoir about a horse trainer who gives up everything to save her racehorse from the abusive horse racing industry. I wouldn’t even describe myself as an “animal lover” but found the descriptions of abuse distressing at times. This is partly due to the wonderful artwork that captures the exciting subject matter beautifully.
