Maybe I'll come back to this one eventually. I think the world building is intriguing and I'm really interested in one of the side stories, but gosh it is a chore trying to slog through the main protagonist's story. I just have no emotional attachment to her. It feels like this traumatic event in her past has completely overwritten her personality and defined her, and we all know people are more than their trauma. It just moves too slow plot wise, and personality wise for Krona I'm just not invested. It's really sad too because I like the diversity and themes explored in this book. I think there's hope I might come back to it, but as of now the pacing and protsgonist are really bumming me out.

It's too big. Tries to do too much, and takes too many words to do it. Almost as if ML got a contract for three thick volumes (the fantasy standard) and then started planning it.

But it has a heckuva plot, and the four stars are because all the pieces come together at the end, which is rare in #1 of 3 these days.

I think there's more magic than there needs to be, and the bad guys seem to have way more tools than the good guys.

There's plenty of room to move on in #2.

I probably missed something, but at the end, with De-Lia where she is and Melanie being what she is, well, let's just say I thought something else would happen.
