The storm is building up! Animals are running to the hill hollow to be safe from the storm!

As the storm builds, the number of animals hiding climbs as well. Soon 10 animals are hiding from the fierce and wet storm. But surprises await when the animals turn around and find more creatures in the cave! The building storm language is a lot of fun. It would be fun to have actions or sound effects with each new development, because they are all read together near the end. The surprise bears in the back of the cave give the opportunity to count backwards as animals run away from the hill hollow. If someone creative loves flannel stories, I think this one has great potential!

2015: We added blowing wind and the ASL sign for rain. We also counted on our fingers during the story. At the end, we also had the ASL sign for bear because we just sang The Bear Went Over the Mountain.

2014 storytime theme: Numbers & Measurements
2015 storytime theme: hills & mountains
Additional themes: woodland creatures, rain, counting

One of the better board books we’ve read. Perfect book to read during spring to talk about weather. Counts up to ten and back again. Illustrations are detailed and funny. Two year old loves to say “rumble grumble” at the end.
