This is the first book to make me cry in quite some time. It’s hard to imagine a book so centered around death and grief to be so vibrantly colorful and comforting, but TJ Klune has done it. While some plot points felt predictable, the book leaves you attached to multiple characters. It’s an easy read that can leave you feeling all kinds of emotions.

OH I LOVED THIS BOOK. I had read one of Klune's other books this year, too, and my friend strongly suggested I read this one, so I lent it from her... BEST DECISION I HAVE EVER MADE. Genuinely one of my favorite books; the writing was so strong, all of the main characters were likeable and unique while being relatable and imperfect, and also GHOSTS!!! I am such a huge fan of paranormal stuff already, but this sort of idea about the afterlife is so original and I absolutely loved it. My only complaint was Wallace and Hugo's relationship seemed sort of rushed into, but it played itself out well, especially towards the end. I ABSOLUTELY RECOMMEND THIS!

This book is beautiful: haunting (sometimes quite literally), aching with longing, and filled with lessons about the true importance of life.

I loved The House in the Cerulean Sea and was really excited to pick up Under the Whispering Door but the tone didn't particularly work for me. I'm not a big fan of YA and some of the cutsey dialogue and descriptions clashed with the serious topics the book covers.

The story was pretty interesting, with some unexpected turns, and I liked the character of the Manager
and the fact he turned out to be a good guy in the end? Maybe not completely, but an interesting twist.
Wallace started off as SUCH an arsehole it was a bit difficult to buy his redemption, and considering his growth, some of the other characters (Desdemona, Harvey) are too one-dimensional in comparison.

The ending with
Nelson and Hugo accepting Nelson's death was really touching and handled well. I think if I'd had read this a few months ago very soon after losing a family member it would have hit a lot harder.
