This book is all rather depressing.

It does the usual biographical/autobiographical thing. The subject breezily runs through his early life, before spending most of the book on the reason we bought the book. In this case, leading the Conservatives and Government (both in and out of the Coalition).

The referenda he instigated get the most coverage. The AV vote getting least coverage of the three, and he seemed surprisingly blasé about it. The Brexit referendum, unsurprisingly, got the most, and it told me he really didn’t understand what happened.

They say that all political life ends in failure, and that is confirmed here. That’s why it’s a depressing read. You’ll probably learn something, but you’ll probably think he didn’t reveal anything too shocking or profound here too.

This was a great political memoir, delving into important concepts including the constitution and EU membership.

As someone who disagrees with Cameron politically and has never found him a massively politically engaging figure this book is fantastic. It is often easy to ignore everything politicians on the opposing side to your affiliations have to say, I am glad I did not here.

Truly a must read for anyone interested in British politics and Britain’s role in the wider political scene. Cameron is honest about his shortcomings and failures yet rejoices in his successes. He condemns the Tory back benchers and openly reflects on the actions of his closest allies in politics whether those opinions are positive or negative.

I listened to all forty hours of this as an audiobook narrated by David Cameron himself and for anyone overwhelmed by the length of the book treat it is as podcasts and listen to a chapter a day.

This book made me furious and proud of the British democratic system and the key figures that operate within it. I would recommended this book to anyone with an interest in politics and modern history - an easy five star read.
